Theme park fans and history buffs alike have something exciting to celebrate with the release of Knott’s Bear-y Tales: The Complete History of the Whimsical Attraction by Christopher Merritt and J. Eric Lynxwiler. This first-ever book on the beloved Knott’s Berry Farm attraction dives deep into the fascinating story of its creation, bringing together interviews, concept art, and behind-the-scenes details from those who helped bring the ride to life.
The Unlikely Partnership Behind a Legendary Ride
The story of Knott’s Bear-y Tales begins in 1974, when designer and artist Rolly Crump—already known for his work with Disney—was invited to Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California. The invitation came from Marion Knott, who had recently stepped into a leadership role at the park founded by her parents, Walter and Cordelia Knott. This book not only chronicles the whimsical dark ride but also explores the journey of Marion Knott, the first female creative executive of an American theme park, and her impact on the industry.
Crump, eager to step out from under the shadow of his previous employer, saw this as the perfect opportunity to spread his wings. Together, he and Knott formed an unlikely but powerful creative duo, assembling a team of talented artists to craft a one-of-a-kind dark ride experience—one that would engage not just the eyes and ears but also the sense of smell.
A Ride Like No Other
When Knott’s Bear-y Tales debuted in 1975, it quickly became a fan favorite. The attraction followed Boysen Bear and Girlsen Bear on a delightful adventure to the Fair at Calico, where they had to protect their pies from the mischievous Crafty Coyote. Featuring vivid characters, imaginative scenery, and even signature scents like boysenberry pie, the ride stood out as one of the most unique experiences in theme park history.
Although the original attraction closed in 1986, it left a lasting legacy. The spirit of Bear-y Tales was revived in 2020 with Knott’s Bear-y Tales: Return to the Fair, a modern interactive dark ride that pays homage to Crump’s original vision.
